The life
Hatice Özgener began teaching in Selanik in 1878, after studying at Kırmızı Mektep and the girls’ secondary school. The daughter of Şeyh Mustafa Efendi and Fatma Hanım, she knew Greek and raised four children with her husband Cemal Bey. Her career moved between classroom teaching, head teaching and school administration. The Balkan Wars disrupted her service; the biography records a wartime public-service allowance before her appointment to teach history at Istanbul’s Darülmuallimat in 1913. She subsequently worked in girls’ schools and orphanages in Süleymaniye, Kadıköy, Bebek and Çağlayan. After retiring in 1924, she became a member of parliament in 1936. She died on 21 February 1940.
