Life and register readings

The life of İmamzâde Yakub Kenan Efendi began in Germili (Çemişgezek) in 1829/30 (AH 1245). At about 16, in 1845/46, İmamzâde Yakub Kenan began work in Harput, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1845/46, places İmamzâde Yakub Kenan in Harput as Tahrirat kalemi memuru, where the entries run to 1849/50. İmamzâde Yakub Kenan then moved to a post with no place named from 1850 to 1855, then Çemişgezek from 1856 to 1861. Next came Erzincan and Erzurum from 1866 to 1869, then a post with no place named from 1869 to 1882. The lists have no entry for 1862 to 1866 and 1878 to 1880. Alongside, the lists for 1881/82 give a second post, in Mazgirt as Tahrirat müdürü. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1855/56; Infisal for 1861/62 and 1877/78.

Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1845/46 to a peak of 1,500 in 1869/70, when 82 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 28 years of salary come to 229,800 kuruş, 1.7 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1881/82.
