Life and register readings
The life of Yusuf Ziya Efendi began in Ayıntab Kalesi in 1829/30 (AH 1245). Work began in Niš (Niş) in 1873/74, at about 44, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 44 or older. The first annual entry, for 1873/74, places Yusuf Ziya in Niš as Bidayet Mahkemesi mümeyyizi. The lists have no entry for 1874 to 1878.
