Life and register readings
Mehmed Tayfun Efendi was born in Diyarbakır in 1830/31 (AH 1246) into the İslam community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in 1848/49, at about 18. The annual lists begin in 1848/49, with Mehmed Tayfun as mal kalemi mülazımı and no place named. At the same time, from 1851 to 1862, the lists also place Mehmed Tayfun in Siirt as mal kalemi refik-i ulası. The annual lists then follow Mehmed Tayfun to Mosul (Musul) from 1862 to 1869. Alongside, the lists for 1868 to 1889 give a second post, in Diyarbakır as muhasebe kalemi refiki. The lists have no entry for 1881 to 1885. For 1886 to 1888 the lists have no entry. Entries spanning 42 years are rare, reached by fewer than 5 per cent of the 8,239 officials.
The salary went from 450 kuruş a month in 1851/52 to 1,470 in 1888/89, the peak, in Diyarbakır, when nine in ten paid officials earned less.
