Life and register readings
Born in Kayseri in 1845/46 (AH 1262), Parsih Jürenyan Efendi was the child of a tradesman (esnaf). Parsih Jürenyan began work in Istanbul in 1866/67, at about 20. The annual lists begin in 1866/67, with Parsih Jürenyan as Telgrafhane stajyeri and no place named. For 1867 to 1869 the lists have no entry.
The salary went from 76 kuruş a month in 1869/70 to 1,200 in 1882/83, the peak, when 85 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 800 kuruş. Over 25 years the salaries add up to 199,692 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
