Life and register readings
Born in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Rıza Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Work began in 1871/72, at about 16, on a first salary of 100 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1871/72, names Rıza as Evrak Odası kâtibi, with no place. For 1880 to 1882 the lists have no entry. The lists give Vefat (death) for 1899/1900 instead of a title.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1871/72 to a peak of 960 in 1895/96, when four in five paid officials earned less. Over 28 years the salaries add up to 190,464 kuruş, 1.4 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1899/1900.
