Life and register readings
Mehmed ReĢid Efendi was born in Medina (Medine) in 1848/49 (AH 1265); the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in Mecca (Mekke) in 1865/66, at about 16, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, places Mehmed ReĢid in Mecca as Gurebâ Hastahanesi kâtibi, where the entries run to 1867/68. Alongside, the lists for 1867 to 1872 give a second post, in Jeddah as Rüsûmât İdaresi muhasebe başkitabeti refik-i evveli. At the same time, from 1871 to 1875, the lists also place Mehmed ReĢid in a post with no place named as Hicaz hazinesi sandık kâtibi. For 1875 to 1883 the lists have no entry. The annual lists then follow Mehmed ReĢid back to Jeddah from 1883 to 1887. The lists have no entry for 1887 to 1891. Alongside, the lists for 1886/87 give a second post, in Mecca as Şevne emini. The last entries, from 1891 to 1895, name Mehmed ReĢid as Vilayet merkez sandık emini, with no place.
The salary went from 250 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 2,000 in 1883/84, the peak, in Jeddah, when 93 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 17 years of salary come to 202,956 kuruş, 2.4 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
