Life and register readings
Born in Varna in 1848/49 (AH 1265), MEHMED MUHİDDİN EFENDİ came from the İslam community; the father's occupation was "Varna muhasebecisi". MEHMED MUHİDDİN began work in 1865/66, at about 16, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, names MEHMED MUHİDDİN as Tahrir-i Emlak Komisyonu üçüncü sınıf muharriri, with no place. For 1866 to 1869 the lists have no entry. Next came a return to Varna, the birthplace, from 1869 to 1878, then a post with no place named from 1879 to 1895. The lists have no entry for 1891 to 1894. Alongside, the lists for 1894/95 give a second post, in Soma as Vergi kâtibi. The lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1865/66 and Infisal for 1878 instead of a title.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 600 in 1880/81, the peak, when 68 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 24 years the salaries add up to 142,500 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
