Life and register readings
The life of Mahmud Niyazi Efendi began in Didymoteicho (Dimetoka); the father's occupation was "Aşar mültezimi". The personnel record dates the first work in Didymoteicho to 1888/89 (AH 1306), after the first annual entry, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1886/87, places Mahmud Niyazi in Edirne as Edirne Askerî Rüşdiyesi öğrencisi (Görevin sona ermesi). The annual lists then follow Mahmud Niyazi back to Didymoteicho, the birthplace, from 1888 to 1891, then Uzunköprü (Cisr-i Ergene) in 1900/01. The lists have no entry for 1891 to 1899. Mahmud Niyazi then moved to a post with no place named from 1902 to 1908. Alongside, the lists for 1907/08 give a second post, in Veliko Tarnovo as Ziraat Bankası Sandığı muhasebe kâtibi.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1888/89 to 500 in 1907/08, the peak, in Veliko Tarnovo, when half the paid officials earned less.
