Life and register readings
The life of Seyit Ahmet RaĢit Efendi began in Kars in 1843/44 (AH 1259); the father's occupation was "Süleymaniye Sancağı Sıhhiye Müdürü". The first annual entry, for 1865/66, places Ahmet RaĢit in Edirne as Ruznamçe Kalemi İkinci Muharriri, where the entries run to 1867/68. Alongside, the lists for 1870/71 give a second post, in Gelibolu as Tahrir Seyyare Bölüğü Başmemuru. Ahmet RaĢit then moved to a post with no place named from 1872 to 1878, then Istanbul from 1878 to 1883. Alongside, the lists for 1882 to 1886 give a second post, in Izmir as Tahrir ve Vergi Memuru. In place of a title the lists give Vefat (death) for 1885/86.
Pay rose from 800 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to a peak of 1,250 in 1870/71, in Gelibolu, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş. After 12 years the salary stood below the first, 750 kuruş against 800. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 93,360 kuruş, 1.6 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1885/86.
