Life and register readings

Born in Aleppo (Halep) in 1861/62 (AH 1278), Selim Raad Efendi came from the Katolik community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in Bulgaristan in 1900/01, at about 39, on a first salary of 3,700 kuruş. Fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known began work at 39 or older. The first annual entry, for 1900/01, places Selim Raad in Bulgaristan as Bulgaristan Komiserliği Fransızca başkâtibi, where the entries run to 1902/03. Alongside, the lists for 1902 to 1908 give a second post, in Istanbul as Daire-i Habisiyye memuru, with a rise to Tanzimat Dairesi memuru in 1906/07.

The salary went from 3,700 kuruş a month in 1900/01 to 4,500 in 1906/07, the peak, in Istanbul, when 97 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 277,200 kuruş, 8 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. Over the years with a salary, pay stood on average in the top 3.4 per cent of each year's paid officials, a standing reached by 21 of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1907/08.
