Born in Bursa in 1872/73 (AH 1289), Mehmed Süreyya Efendi came from the İslam community; the father's occupation was "Bezzaz". Work began in 1885/86, at about 14. The first annual entry, for 1885/86, names Mehmed Süreyya as mülâzametle, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1887 to 1889.
