Life and register readings
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Ürgüp in 1861/62 (AH 1278); the father's occupation was "Ürgüp kazası tahrirat katibi". Work began in Ürgüp in 1876/77, at about 15. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Mehmet Tevfik in Ürgüp, the birthplace, as Telgrafhane mülazımı, where the entries run to 1880/81. Alongside, the lists for 1880 to 1892 give a second post, in Nevşehir as Bidayet mahkemesi birinci kâtibi. At the same time, from 1891 to 1895, the lists also place Mehmet Tevfik in Ürgüp as Nüfus memuru.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1880/81, in Nevşehir, when 46 per cent of paid officials earned less. After 15 years the salary stood below the first, 250 kuruş against 400. The last annual entry is for 1894/95.
