Life and register readings
Josef Efendi was born in Bilecik in 1872/73 (AH 1289), into the Katolik community, and the father's occupation was "İpek tüccarı". Work began in İzmit in 1893/94, at about 21, on a first salary of 600 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1893/94, with Josef as Orman başmüfettiş yardımcısı in İzmit, where the entries run to 1897/98. At the same time, from 1897 to 1902, the lists also place Josef in Ertugrul as Orman müfettişi. Alongside, the lists for 1901 to 1906 give a second post, in İnegöl as Emlak İdaresi yardımcısı. Alongside, the lists for 1905/06 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Çiftlik ve orman memuru.
Pay rose from 600 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 900 in 1897/98, in Ertugrul, when 81 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 13 years the salaries add up to 126,000 kuruş, 2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1905/06.
