Life and register readings
Born in Mosul (Musul) in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Yasef Efendi came from the Katolik community; the father was a money-changer (sarraf). Yasef began work in Mosul in 1885/86, at about 15. From the first annual entry, for 1885/86, to 1894/95, every annual entry places Yasef in the same post, Düyûn-ı Umûmiye İdaresi mülâzımı, in Mosul, the birthplace. The lists give Infisal for 1894/95 instead of a title.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 250 kuruş a month in 1889/90, in Mosul, when 21 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, six years of salary come to 18,000 kuruş, 62 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
