Life and register readings
Osman Paşa was born in Istanbul in 1840/41 (AH 1256) into the İslam community; the father was a colonel (miralay). Work began in 1861/62, at about 21. The annual lists begin in 1861/62, with Osman as Erkân-ı Harbiye mülâzımı and no place named. Osman then moved to six places in 20 years, from Shumen (Şumnu) to Komotini (Gümülcine). The lists have no entry for 1865 to 1869. Alongside, the lists for 1880/81 give a second post, in Mecca as Ferik; Mekke ve Medine asakir kumandanı. The last entries, from 1881 to 1892, name Osman as Hicaz valisi (kumandanlıkla), with no place. For 1882 to 1886 the lists have no entry. The lists have no entry for 1888 to 1890. The farthest post, Mecca, lay about 2,400 km from Istanbul, and fewer than 2 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
