Life and register readings
Born in Antalya in 1853/54 (AH 1270), Nikoli Fehmi Efendi came from the Hristiyan community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Nikoli Fehmi studied at a Greek Orthodox school (Rum Mektebi).
At about 14, in 1867/68, Nikoli Fehmi began work. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, names Nikoli Fehmi as Teke Sancağı Muhasebe Kalemi mülazımı, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1876 to 1880 give a second post, in Antalya as Antalya Rüsumat Müdürlüğü üçüncü kâtibi. The lists have no entry for 1880 to 1884. In place of a title the lists give Vefat (death) for 1884/85.
The salary went from 100 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 370 in 1876/77, the peak, in Antalya, when 40 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 11 years the salaries add up to 30,600 kuruş, 54 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1884/85.
