Life and register readings
The life of Hüseyin Şükrü Efendi began in Istanbul in 1835/36 (AH 1251); the father's occupation was "Saray-ı Hümayun Hatab Anbarı çetelecesi". Work began in Erzurum in 1854/55, at about 19, on a first salary of 400 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1854/55, names Hüseyin Şükrü as Hastahane memuru, with no place. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1863/64. Entries spanning 44 years are rare, reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 8,239 officials.
Pay rose from 400 kuruş a month in 1854/55 to a peak of 1,000 in 1886/87, when four in five paid officials earned less. In all, 38 years of salary come to 296,736 kuruş, 1.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
