Life and register readings
Mehmet Sabri Bey was born in Dagistan in 1840/41 (AH 1256). At about 35, in 1875/76, Mehmet Sabri began work, on a first salary of 720 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1875/76, with Mehmet Sabri as Nahiye Muduru and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1876 to 1879. Alongside, the lists for 1884 to 1887 give a second post, in Perşembe as Nahiye Muduru. Alongside, the lists for 1886 to 1906 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Nahiye Muduru. For 1897 to 1901 the lists have no entry. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1875/76, 1889/90, 1895/96 and 1905/06; Infisal for 1880/81 and 1903/04.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 720 kuruş a month in 1875/76, as Nahiye Muduru, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 400 kuruş. Over 24 years pay ended below where it began, 400 kuruş against 720. In all, 24 years of salary come to 137,100 kuruş, 1.2 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1905/06.
