Life and register readings
Hüseyin Hüsnü Efendi was born in Harput in 1836/37 (AH 1252). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). At about 25, in 1861/62, Hüseyin Hüsnü began work. The first annual entry, for 1861/62, names Hüseyin Hüsnü as Meyva Gümrüğü mülazımı, with no place. In place of a title the lists give Vefat (death) for 1886/87.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1863/64 to 700 in 1873/74, the peak, when two in three paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 320 kuruş. Over 24 years the salaries add up to 91,920 kuruş, 75 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1886/87.
