Life and register readings
Selim Efendi was born in Safranbolu in 1846/47 (AH 1263). At about 29, in 1876/77, Selim began work, on a first salary of 400 kuruş. From the first annual entry, for 1876/77, to 1900/01, every annual entry places Selim in the same post, Kiler-i Hümayun hademesi, in Istanbul. A career like this is rare; fewer than 5 per cent of the 2,755 officials whose entries span 20 years or more stayed in one place throughout.
