Life and register readings
The life of Mehmet İzzet Efendi began in Ankara in 1833/34 (AH 1249); the father's occupation was "Haymana kazası mülkiye müdürü". Work began in Ankara in 1872/73, at about 39. Of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known, fewer than 4 per cent started at 39 or older. The annual lists begin in 1872/73, with Mehmet İzzet as Arazi kalemi mülazımı in Ankara, the birthplace. Next came Haymana and Beypazarı from 1878 to 1880. Alongside, the lists for 1881/82 give a second post, in Haymana as Muvakkat duhan tahrir memuru. The last entries, from 1885 to 1894, name Mehmet İzzet as Memleha kâtibi, with no place. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1879/80, Infisal for 1888 to 1891 and Azil (dismissal) for 1891/92.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 750 kuruş a month in 1874/75, when 70 per cent of paid officials earned less. The peak lasted a single year; the next list gives 500 kuruş. Over 11 years pay ended below where it began, 300 kuruş against 750. The last annual entry is for 1893/94.
