Life and register readings

Şaban Paşa was born in Bursa in 1834/35 (AH 1250) into the İslam community; the father was a merchant (tüccar). Work began in 1856/57, at about 22. The annual lists begin in 1856/57, with Şaban as mülâzım-ı sânîlik and no place named. The lists have no entry for 1857 to 1887. In 1887/88 the lists place Şaban in Basra. The farthest post, Basra, lay about 2,000 km from Bursa, and fewer than 4 per cent of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.

The one salary in the lists is 15,000 kuruş a month, for 1887/88, when 99 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1887/88.

Places in order of time

Each number is a stop: the birthplace, the place of first work, then every place of the annual entries in turn. The year beside an arrow is the first entry at the new place.
