Life and register readings
Mehmet Akif Efendi was born in Bilecik in 1865/66 (AH 1282); the father was a tanner (debbağ). The personnel record dates the first work in Bilecik to 1890/91, after the first annual entry, on a first salary of 400 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1884/85, with Mehmet Akif as Askerlik and no place named. At the same time, from 1890/91, the lists also place Mehmet Akif in Bilecik as Düyun-ı Umumiye Müdürlüğü memurluğu.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1890/91, in Bilecik, when 45 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
