Life and register readings
The life of Mustafa Necib Efendi began in Harput in 1832/33 (AH 1248). At about 20, in 1852/53, Mustafa Necib began work in Sidon (Sayda), on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1852/53, names Mustafa Necib as Meclis-i tahkik kâtibi, with no place. The annual lists then follow Mustafa Necib to Damascus (Şam) from 1853 to 1857, then a post with no place named from 1857 to 1865. Alongside, the lists for 1861/62 give a second post, in Beirut as Emlak Memuru. Next came Ioannina (Yanya) from 1864 to 1868, with a rise to Tahrirat başkâtibi in 1864/65, then a post with no place named from 1868 to 1875, with a rise to Sancak Muhasebecisi. The lists have no entry for 1875 to 1877. The last posts were in Van from 1877 to 1880.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1852/53 to 4,500 in 1869/70, the peak, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 23 years the salaries add up to 727,200 kuruş, 6.2 times what an official on the median salary earned, a level reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The last annual entry is for 1879/80.
