Life and register readings
Ömer Necib Efendi was born in Harput in 1848/49 (AH 1265) into the İslam community. At about 16, in 1865/66, Ömer Necib began work in Istanbul, on a first salary of 350 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1865/66, with Ömer Necib as Zabıt alayı 4. sınıf teftiş memuru in Istanbul, where the entries run to 1874/75. Alongside, the lists for 1879/80 give a second post, in Taiz as Tefer Sancağı Kordon Nezareti başkâtibi. Alongside, the lists for 1879 to 1894 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Mal Muduru. Next came Dhamar in 1896/97. Alongside, the lists for 1896 to 1898 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Kaymakam vekili. The annual lists then follow Ömer Necib to Abu Arish in 1899/1900. The last entries, from 1900 to 1903, name Ömer Necib as Kaymakam vekili, with a rise to district governor (Kaymakam) in 1902/03, with no place. The farthest post, Taiz, lay about 2,850 km from Harput, and 29 of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from the birthplace.
The salary went from 350 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to 3,000 in 1891/92, the peak, when 96 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1902/03.
