Life and register readings
The life of Mehmed Muhtar Efendi began in Safranbolu in 1860/61 (AH 1277); the father's occupation was "telgraf çavuşu". At about 16, in 1876/77, Mehmed Muhtar began work. The first annual entry, for 1876/77, places Mehmed Muhtar in Safranbolu, the birthplace, as telgraf mülazımı. The lists have no entry for 1877 to 1880. Mehmed Muhtar then moved to Devrek from 1880 to 1887. Alongside, the lists for 1886 to 1895 give a second post, in Samsun as merkez muhabere memuru.
The salary went from 380 kuruş a month in 1880/81 to 400 in 1894/95, the peak, in Samsun, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1894/95.
