Life#
İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Harput in 1873/74 (AH 1290), into the Muslim (Müslüman) community. Schooling took seven years, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).
At about 16, in 1889/90, İsmail Hakkı began work in Samsun, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 350 kuruş. Both annual entries, for 1892/93 and 1893/94, place İsmail Hakkı in Mecca (Mekke) as a postal official (Posta Memuru).
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 350 kuruş a month in 1892/93, as Posta Memuru in Mecca, when 22 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1893/94.
