Life

Born in Harput in 1875/76 (AH 1292) into the Muslim (Müslüman) community, Ali Rıza Efendi was the child of a court official (mahkeme memuru). Ali Rıza had seven years of schooling, at a middle school (Rüşdiye Mektebi).

At about 29, in 1904/05, Ali Rıza began work in Carsancak, with three unpaid years as a mülazım (apprentice) before a first salary of 300 kuruş. Few began so late; fewer than 5 per cent of the 5,128 officials whose age at first work is known started at 29 or older. Both annual entries, for 1907/08 and 1908/09, place Ali Rıza in Diyarbakır as a communications official (Muhabere Memuru).

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 300 kuruş a month in 1907/08, as Muhabere Memuru in Diyarbakır, when 39 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1908/09. Ali Rıza probably has an entry in "Sicill-i ahvâl defterlerine göre Harputlu devlet adamları" by ENES MUTLUAY (2018) (the name, the birthplace and the archive register and second number agree).
