Life and register readings
Born in Tirebin, Osman Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Work began in 1897/98 (AH 1315), on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1897/98, names Osman as Polis mülazemeti, with no place. Osman then moved to Istanbul from 1903 to 1907. Alongside, the lists for 1906/07 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Yol daireleri memuru.
The salary went from 300 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to 400 in 1906/07, the peak, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1906/07.
