Life and register readings
Mehmed Zeki Efendi was born in Mecca (Mekke) in 1876/77 (AH 1293); the father's occupation was "Hazine-i Celîle-i Hazret-i Nebevî kâtibi". At about 15, in 1890/91, Mehmed Zeki began work in Jeddah (Cidde). From the first annual entry, for 1890/91, to 1904/05, every annual entry places Mehmed Zeki in the same post, Rüsûmât Nezâreti Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı, in Jeddah.
The salary went from 200 kuruş a month in 1891/92 to 400 in 1897/98, the peak, in Jeddah, when 45 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1904/05.
