Life and register readings
Pivovdik Arif Efendi was born in Nikšić (Nikşik) in 1856/57 (AH 1273). Work began in 1868/69, at about 12, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. Few began so young; fewer than 3 per cent of the 5,664 officials whose age at first work is known started at 12 or younger. The annual lists begin in 1868/69, with Pivovdik Arif as Meclis-i Deâvî kâtibi and no place named. Pivovdik Arif then moved back to Nikšić, the birthplace, from 1872 to 1878, then Celebipazari and Pljevlja (Taşlıca) from 1878 to 1881. For 1881 to 1885 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1887 to 1889 give a second post, in Elbasan as Bidayet Mahkemesi müddeiumumi muavini. Next came Durrës (Dıraç) from 1890 to 1896. The last posts were in Preveza in 1896/97 and Malatya in 1898/99. Seven provinces on two continents in all, a number reached by fewer than 2 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1868/69 to a peak of 1,400 in 1880/81, in Pljevlja, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 26 years the salaries add up to 275,520 kuruş, 2.1 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1898/99.
