Life and register readings
Mahmud Efendi was born in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1872/73 (AH 1289). Work began in Baghdad in 1888/89, at about 16, on a first salary of 35 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1888/89, places Mahmud in Baghdad, the birthplace, as Vilayet Muhasebe Kalemi mesalih-i cariye kâtibi refiki, where the entries run to 1891/92. Alongside, the lists for 1891 to 1898 give a second post, in Basra as Vilayet Muhasebe Kalemi varidat kitabeti refiki. The lists have no entry for 1893 to 1895. For 1898 to 1900 the lists have no entry. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1892/93 and Vefat (death) for 1900/01.
