Life and register readings
Born in Istanbul in 1843/44 (AH 1259), Maksim Efendi came from the Katolik community. Maksim began work in 1862/63, at about 19. The annual lists begin in 1862/63, with Maksim as Tahrirat-ı Hariciye Evrak Kalemi mülazımı and no place named. Alongside, the lists for 1881 to 1890 give a second post, in Kalas as Kalas başşehbenderi. Alongside, the lists for 1886 to 1899 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Tuna Avrupa Komisyonu azası. Alongside, the lists for 1898/99 give a second post, in Sofia as Sofya tüccar vekili. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1896/97, Mazuliyet for 1897/98 and Azil (dismissal) for 1898/99.
The salary went from 50 kuruş a month in 1862/63 to 3,000 in 1881/82, the peak, in Kalas, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, 38 years of salary come to 668,064 kuruş, 3.5 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years. Pay rose to 60 times the first salary; fewer than 4 per cent of the 2,724 officials paid for ten years or more rose as far. The last annual entry is for 1898/99.
