Mehmet Hamdi Efendi was born in Kütahya in 1852/53 (AH 1269). The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi). At about 17, in 1870/71, Mehmet Hamdi began work in Kütahya. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, places Mehmet Hamdi in Kütahya, the birthplace, as Kütahya Sancağı Tahrirat Kalemi mülazımı, where the entries run to 1872/73.
