Life and register readings
Born in Bursa in 1866/67 (AH 1283) into the İslam community, Hüsnü Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Hüsnü began work in 1881/82, at about 16. The first annual entry, for 1881/82, names Hüsnü as Mulazemet, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1889 to 1892 and 1893 to 1896.
Pay rose from 190 kuruş a month in 1882/83 to a peak of 450 in 1896/97, when half the paid officials earned less. In all, ten years of salary come to 29,760 kuruş, 61 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The last annual entry is for 1897/98.
