Life and register readings
Mehmed Ziya Efendi was born in Drama in 1860/61 (AH 1277). Work began in 1878, at about 17. The first annual entry, for 1878, names Mehmed Ziya as a candidate official (Mülazım), with no place. At the same time, from 1893/94, the lists also place Mehmed Ziya in Eleftheroupoli (Pravişte) as Mal Muduru.
Pay rose from 100 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 600 in 1893/94, as Mal Muduru in Eleftheroupoli, when 65 per cent of paid officials earned less.
