Mehmed Memduh Bey

Mehmed Memduh Bey was born in Istanbul in 1870/71 (AH 1287); the father's occupation was "Cemile Sultan'ın kethüdası". Work began in Istanbul in 1887/88, at about 17. The first annual entry, for 1887/88, places Mehmed Memduh in Istanbul, the birthplace, as Tahrirat-ı Hariciye Evrak Odası mülazımı, where the entries run to 1892/93. Alongside, the lists for 1892/93 give a second post, in Ioannina as Vilayet tercümanı. At the same time, from 1892 to 1896, the lists also place Mehmed Memduh in Erzurum as Vilayet tercümanı. Alongside, the lists for 1895 to 1898 give a second post, in Trikala as Şehbenderhane kançıları. Alongside, the lists for 1897/98 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Şehbender vekili. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1895/96.

The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 1,390 kuruş a month in 1892/93, in Erzurum, when 88 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over six years the salaries add up to 89,520 kuruş, 3 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1897/98.
