Life and register readings
The life of Mehmet Şakir Efendi began in Istanbul in 1836/37 (AH 1252); the father's occupation was "sahaf". At about 16, in 1851/52, Mehmet Şakir began work in Istanbul. The first annual entry, for 1851/52, places Mehmet Şakir in Istanbul, the birthplace, as a candidate official (Mülazım), where the entries run to 1873/74. Alongside, the lists for 1873 to 1880 give a second post, in a post with no place named as hendesehane katibi.
