Life and register readings
Born in Harput in 1855/56 (AH 1272), Karaalizâde Mehmed Naci Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Karaalizâde Mehmed Naci began work in 1877/78, at about 21, on a first salary of 100 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1877/78, with Karaalizâde Mehmed Naci as Mahrec mekâtib-i askeriye hastahanesi kitabet refakati and no place named. Karaalizâde Mehmed Naci then moved to Asir from 1879 to 1883. Alongside, the lists for 1885/86 give a second post, in Al Hudaydah as Sancak muhasebeciliği vekâleti. The annual lists then follow Karaalizâde Mehmed Naci to Burdur, Şanlıurfa (Urfa) and İzmit from 1888 to 1907. Alongside, the lists for 1906 to 1908 give a second post, in Edirne as Vilayet defterdarlığı vekâleti. The last posts were in Adana in 1908/09 and Aydın in 1910/11. Al Hudaydah, about 2,700 km from Harput, was the post farthest from the birthplace; only 43 of the 5,339 officials with a known birthplace and place of service served as far from home. Few officials served in as many provinces; fewer than 2 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service did.
The salary went from 150 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to 6,000 in 1907/08, the peak, in Edirne, when 98 per cent of paid officials earned less. That salary was paid for a single year, and the next list gives 4,500 kuruş. The last annual entry is for 1910/11.
