Life and register readings
Born in Trebinje (Trebin) in 1871/72 (AH 1288), Osman Efendi was the child of a merchant (tüccar). Osman began work in Istanbul in 1897/98, at about 26, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. Every annual entry from 1897/98 to 1906/07 places Osman in Istanbul, first as a policeman (Polis), from 1901/02 as Polis (İstifa).
Pay rose from 300 kuruş a month in 1897/98 to a peak of 400 in 1905/06, in Istanbul, when 41 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1906/07.
