Life and register readings
İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Taşköprü in 1857/58 (AH 1274) into the İslam community. At about 19, in 1877/78, İsmail Hakkı began work, on a first salary of 190 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1877/78, names İsmail Hakkı as Tahrirat kâtibi ve nüfus mukayyidi, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1878 to 1879 give a second post, in Taşköprü as Geçici aşar kul kâtibi. The annual lists then follow İsmail Hakkı to İnebolu from 1884 to 1892. The last post was in Gönen in 1900/01, with a rise to Mal Muduru. For 1894 to 1899 the lists have no entry. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1878, Infisal for 1893/94 and Azil (dismissal) for 1899/1900.
Pay rose from 190 kuruş a month in 1877/78 to a peak of 500 in 1887/88, in İnebolu, when 54 per cent of paid officials earned less. The last annual entry is for 1900/01.
