Life and register readings
MUSTAFA EFENDİ was born in Varna in 1851/52 (AH 1268). At about 17, in 1869/70, MUSTAFA began work in Varna, on a first salary of 300 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1869/70, with MUSTAFA as Müskirat ikinci mukayyidi and no place named. Alongside, the lists for 1870 to 1875 give a second post, in Balchik as Rüsûmat kâtibi. The lists have no entry for 1875 to 1885. The last entry, for 1885/86, names MUSTAFA as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru), with no place. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1874/75 and 1885/86.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 400 kuruş a month in 1869/70, when 44 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1885/86.
