Life and register readings
The life of Veliyyüddin Efendi began in Antakya in 1836/37 (AH 1252); the father's occupation was "Sipahi Binbaşısı". At about 31, in 1867/68, Veliyyüddin began work in Payas, on a first salary of 347 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Veliyyüddin in Payas as Rüsumat İdaresi Baş Kitabeti Sandık Emini. Alongside, the lists for 1868/69 give a second post, in Antakya as Tapu Yoklama Kâtibi. The annual lists then follow Veliyyüddin to Samandağ in 1875/76. Alongside, the lists for 1875 to 1878 give a second post, in Adana as Dördüncü Duhan Fabrikası Memuru. Alongside, the lists for 1878 to 1882 give a second post, in a post with no place named as a customs official (Rüsumat Memuru). Next came Kars in 1882/83. Alongside, the lists for 1890 to 1893 give a second post, in Payas as Mal Muduru. Veliyyüddin then moved to Kars from 1895 to 1897. Alongside, the lists for 1896/97 give a second post, in Mut as Mal Muduru. Few officials served in as many places; fewer than 8 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service did.
Pay rose from 347 kuruş a month in 1867/68 to a peak of 600 in 1889/90, as Mal Muduru, when two in three paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
