Life and register readings
The life of Osman Faik Efendi began in Sivas in 1839/40 (AH 1255). Osman Faik began work in Malatya in 1867/68, at about 28, on a first salary of 3,500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1867/68, places Osman Faik in Malatya as a district governor (Kaymakam), where the entries run to 1869/70. Osman Faik then moved to Silvan, Gürün and Gaza (Gazze) from 1871 to 1874. The last post was in Baghdad (Bağdat) in 1882/83, with a rise to Merkez Müddei-i Umumi Muavini. Five provinces in all, a number reached by fewer than 6 per cent of the 6,605 officials with a place of service.
The salary never rose above the first in the lists, 3,500 kuruş a month in 1867/68, as Kaymakam in Malatya, when 91 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, seven years of salary come to 228,600 kuruş, 6.3 times what an official on the median salary earned in those years, a level reached by fewer than 4 per cent of the 4,381 officials paid for five years or more. The final annual entry is for 1882/83.
