Life and register readings
Mehmet Tevfik Efendi was born in Bom in 1864/65 (AH 1281), into the İslam community, and the father's occupation was "Halidiye tarikatı şeyhi". Work began in 1893/94, at about 29, on a first salary of 750 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1893/94, names Mehmet Tevfik as Nahiye Muduru, with no place. Alongside, the lists for 1900/01 give a second post, in Istanbul as İzin. The last entries, from 1901 to 1911, name Mehmet Tevfik as a district governor (Kaymakam), with a rise to Kaymakam in 1911, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1902 to 1907. For 1909 to 1911 the lists have no entry. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1901/02, Infisal for 1908/09 and Azil (dismissal) for 1912/13.
Pay rose from 750 kuruş a month in 1893/94 to a peak of 2,500 in 1911, as Kaymakam, when nine in ten paid officials earned less. Over 12 years the salaries add up to 120,840 kuruş, 2 times what an official on the median salary earned. The final annual entry is for 1912/13.
