Life and register readings
İsmail Hakkı Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1845/46 (AH 1262); the father's occupation was "Suriye vilayeti temyiz mümeyyizi". The schooling was at a school for young children (Sıbyan Mektebi).
Work began in Trikala (Tırhala) in 1865/66, at about 19, on a first salary of 250 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1865/66, places İsmail Hakkı in Trikala as Seyyare Fırkası tezkire mukayyidi ve mümeyyizi, where the entries run to 1868/69. İsmail Hakkı then moved to Konya in 1869/70. The last entries, from 1870 to 1887, name İsmail Hakkı as Tahrirat-ı Emlak Kalemi senedat ve ilamat kâtibi, with no place. The lists have no entry for 1878 to 1881. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1868 to 1870.
Pay rose from 250 kuruş a month in 1865/66 to a peak of 1,500 in 1876/77, when 86 per cent of paid officials earned less. Over 18 years the salaries add up to 152,172 kuruş, 1.7 times what an official on the median salary earned. The last annual entry is for 1886/87.
