Life and register readings
Katibyan Karabed Efendi was born in Afyonkarahisar (Karahisar-ı Sahib) in 1863/64 (AH 1280); the father was a clerk (katip). Work began in Afyonkarahisar in 1879/80, at about 16, on a first salary of 200 kuruş. The annual lists begin in 1879/80, with Katibyan Karabed as Sancak Muhasebe Kalemi memuru in Afyonkarahisar, the birthplace, where the entries run to 1887/88. Alongside, the lists for 1887 to 1892 give a second post, in a post with no place named as Mal Muduru, with a rise to Mal Muduru. At the same time, from 1891 to 1893, the lists also place Katibyan Karabed in Bolvadin as Mal Muduru.
Pay rose from 200 kuruş a month in 1879/80 to a peak of 600 in 1887/88, as Mal Muduru, when 64 per cent of paid officials earned less. The final annual entry is for 1892/93.
