Life and register readings
Mustafa Efendi was born in Çemişgezek in 1872/73 (AH 1289). Work began in Bucak in 1892/93, at about 20, on a first salary of 130 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1892/93, names Mustafa as Nahiye müdürlüğü kâtibi, with no place. At the same time, from 1893 to 1897, the lists also place Mustafa in Diyarbakır as Maârif muhasebe refakat memuru. In place of a title the lists give İstifa (resignation) for 1893/94.
Pay rose from 130 kuruş a month in 1892/93 to a peak of 200 in 1893/94, in Diyarbakır, when 14 per cent of paid officials earned less. In all, five years of salary come to 11,160 kuruş, 45 per cent of what an official on the median salary earned in those years. The final annual entry is for 1896/97.
