Life and register readings
Manok Azaryan Efendi was born in Istanbul in 1849/50 (AH 1266). Work began in 1870/71, at about 20, on a first salary of 500 kuruş. The first annual entry, for 1870/71, names Manok Azaryan as Mekteb-i Fünun-ı Harbiye Fransızca muallimi, with no place. For 1876 to 1878 the lists have no entry. Alongside, the lists for 1889 to 1897 give a second post, in Kalas as Başşehbender.
The salary went from 500 kuruş a month in 1870/71 to 4,000 in 1878/79, the peak, when 95 per cent of paid officials earned less.
